Whenua Report Background
Te Hanga North Lands Trust is the umbrella Trustee for Blocks Te Hanga A4, A5, A6 & A2B.
The Blocks have been managed is a semi-active way using Farmer Lessees to operate the grazing component of the land blocks following on from original redevelopment stage some 25 years ago.
The Trust has taken a more active approach since 2016 when the Trustees commenced the Original Environmental Protection Project funded by Waikato Regional Council and Nga Whenua Rahui. The Bellamy family have occupied Te Hanga A4, A5 and A6 for many years using the grazing component of the land as Dairy support for their growing number of Dairy businesses on Rapurapu Road. At end of May 2022 the Te Hanga A2B block was taken back via an Occupation Licence to the Trust subsidiary Tapapa West Holdings Ltd.
Environmental Protection Programme Over the years 2016-2000 the Trust completed fencing off, planting and revegetation of most of the remnant bush parcels on the A4, A5 and A6 Blocks. The Fencing was done by local Fencers Evan Bros, Plants and Planting supplied by NZ Native & Flora Nursery from Pyes Pa and the after care provided by appointed Kaitiaki Manager - Ian Walters. The funding and most of the costs are extracted from Nga Whenua Rahui and Waikato Regional Council. The Owners added to the project by funding the planting of two native woodlots establishing Totara trees for long term woodlot development. The establishment of the revegetation and native bush protection has been extremely successful.
In 2022 the Trust has extended their involvement with Nga Whenua Rahui and now includes the earlier established Totara Woodlots and a planted wetland block on Te Hanga A6 (Kawanata Extension). Pic 1 to the lefts is one of the Totara Woodlots on A6 established under revegetation cover. Pic 2 to the left is Young Totara on A6, staked by Ian Walters and due for tip pruning this year to assist the form for future long term timber use. Pic 3 below is the Protection Wetland established by the Trust now included in extended Kawanata Further the kawanata extension includes a section which will be part of the Waiomu Catchment Scheme Project newly developed in 2021/22.
There is further fencing, retirement and native planting on Kakahu Rd end of A6 around the Rapurapu Stream and on the Stream Boundary of Te Hanga A2B. This Catchment Scheme has funding from Provincial Growth Fund, Fonterra and is managed by Waikato Regional Council. Lease management A2B – Occupation Licence with Tapapa West Holdings Ltd Farmed short term as Dairy support land by Jeremy and Emma O’Reilly.
Trust Management has separated this from the neighbouring Dairy unit and re-established A2B as a stand-alone block, improved the entrance from Kakahu Road and is ensuring the weed control and fence maintenance is upgraded from the previous Dairy Farmers low performance. A4, A5, A6 – Ongoing informal lease to Peter and Chris Bellamy Farmed by Peter as Dairy support for one of his Rapurapu Rd Dairy units that has moved to Autumn or Split Calving. This is a long-term relationship now around 25 years; Peter is working closely with the Trust Management to care for the whenua and is supportive of the ongoing Environmental upgrades.
